Why do I get: "Playback failed due to a problem with the video subsystem."

Hello All:

I am getting the following message for an DVD-ROM that I installed all
my XP pro:

"Playback failed due to a problem with the video subsystem. Lowering
your screen resolution or color depth may fix the problem "

I did what the message was suggesting, but did not get the problem
fixed.

If it matters, I am getting this message when I tried to use a
commercially made DVD with a program that came on it (Interactual
Player).

Thanks!

You need dvd player software installed, like PowerDVD or WinDVD.
Interactual player is just a front end, you need real dvd player software
installed to use Interactual properly. There are also isssue with video
card drivers and older video cards, what video card, and what driver version
are you running?

The video card and the drivers may indeed be old.

It says:

Manufacturer: SiS
5598/6326 is the type

Driver Provider is Microsoft
Date: 6/6/2001
Version: 5.1.2001.0

I am going to push the update driver button and see what happens.
I'll also see how I can get PowerDVD or WinDVD.

Thanks,

Well, pushing the "update button" was not much of help.

Checked the SiS site and they do not mention of any drivers for Win.
XP, the newest O/S is W2K.

Does this mean that I have to buy a new video card?

Thanks,

Is this an old machine you just decided to upgrade to XP? Or is this
something decent that was purchased in the last 18 months?

The video card is old. The rest of the system is new. I think it is
time to get a new one.

Which video cards under 50 bucks are worth considering these days?
